Neurophenomenology of Consciousness (Prof. Dr. F. X. Vollenweider)
Our research group is an interdisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians dedicated to advancing the understanding of brain function and behavior in both health and in affective and psychotic disorders. We employ a range of methods to investigate the neurobiology of neuropsychiatric symptoms, identify biomarkers of psychopathology, predict treatment outcomes, and evaluate novel therapeutic interventions. Our approach emphasizes neuropsychological testing and pharmacological challenges combined with advanced neuroimaging techniques.
A core focus of our work is the investigation of acute and long-term effects of psychedelics—such as psilocybin and LSD—on self-awareness, emotion regulation, and social interaction in both healthy individuals and patients with depression or substance use disorders. We also explore how combining contemplative practices with psychedelics may produce synergistic therapeutic benefits, particularly in relation to personality development and mental health. Our overarching aim is to develop innovative treatments for affective disorders.
